Resulting from the political communication around the refugee „crisis” during the summer of 2015, the public representation of refugees and migrants, hate speech and expectations of discriminatory public actions have strengthened among high school students, too. A participatory theatre play based on a piece by the sociologist Luc Boltanski (entitled Les Nuits) as well as on personal experiences with helping refugees, amateur Roma actors of The Missing Classmate Company, in collaboration with drama teachers and social researchers, provided an opportunity for journalists, NGO activists, and high school students to reframe how they recollect the „refugee wave” or the „migrant crisis” in their town. A participatory public campaign was to emerge from these theatre based actions through the use of photo essays and newspaper stories. These public stories would strengthen the hope, not only among participants but also in the wider society, that high profile civic coalitions and action standing up against the current politics of hate is possible.
