Art and Story-Telling Therapy for Chronically Ill Children. Smile Foundation’s Therapy programs aim to provide free-of-charge therapy services to children hospitalized in two Hungarian cities. Long-term hospitalization and painful medical treatments cause fear, panic, aggression, and other changes in behavior which Hungarian medical institutions do not have capacity or financial means to handle. During the 10 month program we aim to reach out to about 200-250 children and 100 relatives in order to help them cope with the difficult situation, become more receptive to treatments. Our experienced psychologists and therapists combine the means of arts (painting, music, story-telling) and psychology to enhance the process of healing. We work in close cooperation with the employees of the medical institutions, where our therapies have already become integrate part of the healing process. Each therapy sessions will be documented, professional experience and learning points will be shared among all Smile therapists at regular art and story-telling workshops, thus building a bridge among professionals working with this method in different Hungarian cities with hospitalized children or children attending our long-term therapy courses (e.g. children recovering from a cancer, facing psychosomatic disorders or the blind). This way we aim to further expand our methods and also to contribute to the development of the culture of using tales and arts in the process of healing.
