Academia for rural development
The aim of the project is to support the communal development of Szirak with the help of students and teachers of Budapest’s Corvinus University. Our primary target group are economically disadvantaged local residents –adults of both Roma and non-Roma descent living on state benefits - as well as the largely Roma youths taking part in the local school’s agricultural education program. Building on the local school’s existing agricultural education program, we plan to widen participants’ horticultural and economical knowledge through a purpose-made course consisting of both lectures and practice sessions. The aim of the course is to build self-esteem, to encourage entrepreneurship, and to foster solidarity among course members, thus strengthening their ability to enforce their interests, both individually and as a group. The ultimate goal of the course is to is to imbue participants with enough professional and personal confidence and know-how to start household farming and mushroom cultivation. Our academic experts will be at hand to provide advice to the start-ups.
In addition, we plan to carry out comprehensive community open space planning. Based on these studies, the village council or other civil organizations will then be able to submit grant applications to turn the plans into reality.
We work closely with the local government as well as the local school and different civil organizations.
