The goal of the project is to increase the social-political awareness of young people studying at high schools and at the University of Szeged. Through thee workshops, symposiums, film screenings, conversations anyone can join the project who is interested in these matters. A more indirect goal is to stimulate civil political activity and the practice of participatory democracy in Szeged. Besides theoretical courses the organizers plan workshops of “democracy-practices”, interactive events, thematic film clubs, creative courses of photography and filming.
Progress of the project:
Our direct goal is to increase the social-political awareness of young people studying at high schools and at the University of Szeged. The workshops, symposiums, film screenings, conversations might provide a deeper insight into the nature of problems pervading or underlying our society for anyone potentially interested in these matters. A more indirect goal is to stimulate civil political activity and the practice of participatory democracy in Szeged.
Besides theoretical courses we plan workshops of “democracy-practices”, interactive events, thematic film clubs, creative courses of photography and filming.
In the elaboration of the project we involve departments of philosophy, sociology, psychology, legal philosophy and sociology, international law, the institution of andragogy at the University of Szeged, teachers of high schools, LGBT and other civil organizations.
The three agendas we undertook to comply were:
* The alternatives of the contemporary interpretation of the term NATION, in particular regarding the anomalies and the phenomenon of antidemocratic nationalisms in Hungary
* The problems of law enforcement and the imposition of PUNISHMENT in Hungary, in particular regarding the custodial sentences
* GENDER roles and the questions of gender identity. These issues are so complex, that we could not (and did not want to) close any of them after the certain stages.
1. NATION ALTERNATIVES
Two symposiums from the oeuvre of István Bibó
Topics were: Does it worth to deal with political philosophy in Hungary and what is it's stake, nation as a political community in the interpretation of Bibó, are there any meaningful political debates, what is good politics and who is a good politician? The oeuvre of Bibó was discussed in connection with various paradigms of philosophical and political history, for example with paradigms of Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault and Norbert Elias but current political narratives were analysed as well (like the speeches at Kötcse or Tusnád).
"History as the collective remembrance of the community"
Presentations and interactive professions for both university and high school students: how is it possible to define and create collective historical remembrance, as well as individual, familial and public elaborations of the past, the changes in the canon of the interpreation of history, the "truth" of history books and the Trianon-syndrome.
The features of new nationalist subcultures
Presentations and workshops: The analysis of radical political movements in 20th century Hungary, where right-wing extremist subcultures and organisations also appeared after the 4th period of 2008. There were analyses on the formation, composition, self-concept and the embeddedness/isolation of Betyársereg, Nemzeti Őrség, Nemzeti Gárda, Kurucinfó, etc.
"For us it means something completely different to be Hungarian"
Elephant Studio created a documentary about Hungarian national rock within the framework of the project and it's professional debate was carried out before the nationwide premiére.
2. BOUNDARIES OF PUNISHMENT
The restriction of criminal proceedings , the thematization of the criminalization of migrants and capital punishment – that appears increasingly in the political communication of recent times – gives a particular timeliness to the project.
"Sentences in Hungary"
A two days long symposium was held on the subjects of capital punishment and lifetime sentence, the problems of contemporary Hungarian procedural law and criminal policiy and the suit of those accused with the gypsy homicides.
Research on the attitude of youngsters
Empirical research on the legal awareness of high school and university students in Szeged, their relation to jurisdiction and punishment, their opinion about various social groups, and the representation of crimes in the media.
Film prémieres, meeting with the authors
Bebukottak, Káin gyermekei, Ítélet Magyarországon
Boundaries of punishment film club
The film-club displayed films that were able to state a relevant opinion on the problems of contemporary punishment execution , the possible boundaries of the state's criminal justice, the conflicts between public authorities and disobedient individuals, and the criminal "career" of youngsters socialized in prison.
"Prison for the city"
A documentary was created with the title above. Among others, we chose the detention facility of the county of Heves because we tried to introduce a positive example of reintegration in Hungary. In the film, besides the detained woman who took part in the cartoon programme, the commander of the institution and the mentor of the cartoon programme are interviewed as well.
3. SOLD BODIES - GENDER topic
The thematization of "gender", that is the most important term of feminist social- and cultural criticism and the woman movement, is justified by the ever increasing Hungarian stigmatization that can be experienced recently in Europe as well.
The presentations and the debates were dealing with the critical analysis of feminism: how can we talk about it and it's various directions, how can we maintain the critical sense of the term "gender" both in science and common talks, and how all these are appearing in the political publicity and the press.
Sold bodies film club
Display of classic and contemporary films about the problems of prostitution, human trafficking and domestic violence.
4. THE MEETING OF CULTURES
Providing support in order to help the cooperation of three high schools.
There were three different locations where the students of these three high schools could get acquainted with the important and distinctive features of each others towns. These schools are Lauder Javne school (Budapest), Kosztolányi Dezső high school (Szabadka/Subotica) and Deák Ferenc high school (Szeged). Teachers of these school undertook the challenge of the summer research work. During this summer project five films were created about jewish heritage of Szabadka and it's surrounding territories, one film about the work of civil society organizations who are providing help for poor people living in Budapest, and one film about the refugees who passed through Szeged.
